About Wayne Burges

Wayne was born and raised in San Antonio, attended Winston Churchill High School and graduated in 1977. He graduated in three years from the University of Texas at San Antonio in May 1980 with a B.B.A. in Accounting. He passed the May 1980 CPA examination, completed the experience requirement and became certified in 1982. Upon graduation he joined the national accounting firm of Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young) on the audit staff in June 1980. When an opportunity arose he joined Norwood Products and Radio Cap Company as Controller. In 1985, Wayne joined American Security Life Insurance as Assistant Controller and its parent company, American Securities Company (now McMarr Properties, Inc), ultimately becoming Vice President/CFO of the parent company. Upon the sale of the life insurance company, Wayne accepted the challenge to attend law school and attended St. Mary’s University School of Law beginning in the fall of 1989. Wayne graduated in the top 5% of his class and passed the February 1993 Texas bar examination. Following graduation he joined the law firm of Cauthorn Hale Tobin & Hornberger (now Hornberger Fuller Sheehan & Beiter). In 1995, Wayne left to start his own accounting firm and law firm. In 1998 he had the opportunity to join Barber & Anderson, P.C., Certified Public Accountants, becoming a shareholder after six months. In 2001 he became a name shareholder in the firm of Barber & Burges, P.C. after the departure of Mr. Anderson. In 2005 Wayne left the firm to start his own firm Wayne L. Burges, P.C. (predecessor to Wayne Burges & Company, P.C.) and to expand his law practice.

Wayne has been married to Karen (Shultz) Burges since 1982. (Winston Churchill High School class of 1978; University of Texas at San Antonio class of 1984). They have two sons, Matthew & Kyle. Karen and Wayne attend University United Methodist Church in San Antonio and Island in the Son United Methodist Church in Port Aransas/Corpus Christi. Karen is an elementary school P.E. teacher. She has taught at Pat Neff Middle School, Oak Meadow Elementary School, Huebner Road Elementary School and is currently at Stone Oak Elementary School. Matthew graduated in December, 2008 from Texas Tech University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Kyle is currently attending Texas A&M – Corpus Christi majoring in business. Hobbies: Hunting, fishing, reading, sports, being with family. Because Wayne has a deep love for the Texas coast and for fishing, he can often be found working in Port Aransas so that he can get on the water sooner. He is actively working to expand the presence of the practice in the Corpus Christi, Rockport and Port Aransas area.
